CBS News | Oregon Foursome Claims $340M in Lottery, is a headline I found waaaaay down at the bottom of the news listings today on Google. Above that were an onslaught of political news articles. Articles in regard to the death and torment of others around the globe, and a few articles of murders who had either been re-detained, or whom are getting new trials (as if the first go around wasn't enough termoil for the victim's family's to go through).
Why do I not see articles written about the wonderful work that doctors and scientists are doing everyday, bringing humankind closer to discovering the cure for things like diabetes and breast cancer? Only a handful of those even exist outside of medical journals. How come there are no updates on how many new kinds of species have been found around the world by biologists and zoologists? And why aren't all those good-hearted folks who trod through the streets day and night to help collect food and clothing for the homeless and shut-in elderly people making headlines? I would think that putting something like this in the top lines of the news would help at least to slightly increase the moral of those around the nation. Hey, it might even help us to feel better about ourselves! Imagine that... GOOD news!? What a concept.
Has anyone ever stopped to think about the base reason behind the on-going addictions to things like, computers, XBox games and videos? Wild off-the-top-of-my-head guess here, but is it possible, that maybe, just maybe, it's because these items give the users a great deal of control over what they are exposed to? How many kids who are 15 truly care one bit about the political on-goings of the French Foreign Ministry? And, for that matter, how many people in France really care about how many cows the United States has? I read an article awhile back about how the United States Department of Aggriculture is able to track a new born cow all the way from its birth mother, through adult life, into the slaughter house, and right to a dinner plate. Yet, ironically enough, the same government that runs the USDA can't seem to keep track of the 3.5+ million illegal immigrants that enter this nation annually. Maybe we ought to give everyone of them a cow? At least that would make the news headlines a bit more interesting to read.
Also, When you see nothing but rape, murder, death, destruction, arson, natural disaster relief problems and medical problems slapped on top of the already mundane news listings of policial scandals and bi-partisan negligence, the news tends to get rather sickening after awhile. People bore of it. They want more in the news that pertains to them. So I say we get more people involved in writing the news. 200 some-odd years ago, newspapers told folks of the hot spots to go fishing, or who was visiting in town that may be of importance to a larger community of people (such as a visiting minister and his wife, or the mayor's parents...etc.). Now we see articles telling people how a church threw out a minister who was brave and honest enough to admit to her own sexual preferences (why this conversation ever came up in the first place is far beyond my understanding, why it's even important is yet another thing I have on my list of odd and peculiar things to think about)....and how the mayor himself has been ousted because he did something(s) that people didn't like or approve of.
The article I read today about a retired couple and their daughter and son-in-law winning $340 million dollars in the Oregon's power ball lottery was great. It made me feel so happy to know that someone had worked hard all their lives and had taken that one chance and came out winning. How terrific is that, really? It's absolutely wonderful. Hey, maybe they'll be given a cow!
