It seriously pains me to see news today about parents still wanting to force their younger children into surgical procedures just to spare the parents from having to 'explain' the gender of their child. I can certainly understand this reasoning from a parental point of view, but honestly... is the world that 'hermophobic' that we can't understand that the powers of natural selection are still alive and well?
Saddly, the answer is yes. Today there was an article from a New Zealand paper that was in regard to a child being put into surgery because it was 'both sexed'. Pardon me?! How dare they!! That out-raged me to disbelief! Who are those parents to say that this child will not grow to be a very successful and socially acceptable person? Who are those doctors to even think of suggesting that type of surgical procedure on such a small and defenseless human?!
I sould think that as advanced as the medical field is today, and with the tremendous achievements that have been made in the fields of technology and industry, that our species is a bit beyond having to 'explain themselves' to other members of this particular race. How do we think that nature has provided us with the physical abilities and psychological capabilities that we have now? What, it was just 'poofed' into us like magic? No folks, this is mother nature at her best.
This is how nature overcomes, modifies and adapts. We are in fact still evolving. We need to keep in mind that we are still relative 'new kids on the block' when it comes to life form residence here on this planet. Humans have only been known to exist for the past 2 - 3.5 million years. Granted, through the means by which we perceive time (in and of itself), this does sound like a very long time. However, considering that the earth itself is about 4.2 BILLION years old, this 2 - 3.5 million year age is a drop in the bucket.
We also need to keep in mind that Hermaphrodytes have been around since the dawn of mankind, just not as numerous, or at least, not as noted, as they are now. So what's the big deal?
Think of this:
You are a parent that has just given birth to a new born baby. When the child arrives, you ask the doctor what gender it is so that you can name it. Right off the bat, the doctor pauses and has no idea if it is predominantly a girl or a boy. Therefore, you as a parent, have an immediate choice to make... you may either have it surgically altered to be one or the other gender, or, give it an appropriate name and raise your child as you would any other child...bearing in mind that this child will NEED TO understand throughout his or her life that he/she is both a he and a she, and that this child will be experiencing many things that both genders experience during the many stages of life.
Now for many parents, this would indeed be a tremendous challenge. For me? No challenge at all. I wold never, not even in a completely insane state of being, even so much as think of ever surgically altering my child's gender... for no reason whatsoever!!
This is not a genetic defect, but rather a genetic altercation for means of survival within the world as we know it today...
This is not something to scoff at, but rather a new and wonderous thing to learn from. Isn't that why we're all here in the first place? To learn from each other's abilities? Many 'what if' questions come to mind as well.
Items that come immediately to my mind range from, "what if this child will spend his or her life free from all types of diseases, or all types of cancers?" ... "What if this child will someday become a great person in the world that can help teach humans about what is new, and what lies ahead for many people?"..... and most importantly... "what if the choice to permanently choose either gender has a great DISadvantage for my child's stronghold in his or her future"?!
These are many questions that also need to be looked on by all fields of science and medicine. These children were not born of genetic defect, but rather born as a way of mother nature telling humans... "You may be at the top of the food chain... but I still hold that chain in my hand, and when I yank it...if you are not prepared...you will fall....so be prepared".
